About Driftless Reading Academy
What we do
The Driftless Reading Academy offers phonics-based reading lessons and literacy coaching for families of students age 3 and up. The lessons are tailored to the individual student. We start with pre-reading activities for the youngest students, and these lead to more advanced lessons over time.
The comprehensive, sequential curriculum provides reading lessons for students while helping parents learn new ways to encourage their student’s language and reading skill development outside the classroom.
The DRA believes that parent involvement is important to the student’s education, and that strong language skills are one key to students’ overall academic success.
Three Year Old Students
Our youngest students are offered four weekly classes, 30-45 minutes each. The cost for four sessions is $40. The child and parent and instructor participate in sound games, vocabulary-building activities, and practical life lessons. Families gain ideas to use at home that follow the child’s interest and skill level. This four-week program may be repeated every few months as desired and as space allows, so that as the child grows, the parent always has age-appropriate activities to work on with the student.
Program and Fees
Classes are weekly and the fee is $40/month. The cost to parents is kept low thanks to funding from foundations, our board members, and other generous donors. A limited number of need-based scholarships are granted when funds are available.
Classes last from 30 to 45 minutes.
Families of three-year-old students are offered a session of four weekly classes that may be repeated every few months as the child’s developmental needs change (see more information below).

Our Facility
We are located three blocks east of downtown Argyle, Wisconsin in the Argyle Lutheran Church at 100 East Street. Typically there is plenty of on-street parking. There are three doors on that side of the church building. Look for the door with the little footbridge.
Wherever possible, the classroom materials and furnishings are made of wood, glass, ceramics, cloth, and paper. There are no electronic screens. There is even an analog clock on the wall! The decor is designed to provide students with a calm, attractive learning environment.
Parent Conferences
Every few months, parents have the option of meeting with the instructor (without the student present, no childcare is provided). This is a time for the instructor to share observations about the student and the next steps in the curriculum, and for parents to share feedback, ask questions, and gain new ideas for learning activities.
